Abstract

Blackwater waste is waste from urine and feces, Blackwater waste is organic waste that contains lots of bacteria. Water-borne disease agents include Coliform and E.coli bacteria. Coliform and E.coli bacteria are found in infiltration water from septic tank. Waste treatment design as a substitute for infiltration wells for narrow houses using PVC pipes which contain quartz sand with a length of 13 m in a spiral shape. Innovations in this design replace quartz sand with black sand that is easily available in the community. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of quartz sand and black sand in blackwater waste treatment. This type of research is Quasi Experiment. The object of research is quartz sand and black sand as a filter. The research variables are E. coli bacteria, Coliform bacteria, pH, Organic Substances and BOD. The results obtained were analyzed using the Mann Whitney U test, shown in tables and diagrams. The results showed that there were differences in the average bacteria Coliform, E. coli, , Organic Substances and BOD in quartz sand and black sand, but there is no difference in the average pH of black sand and quartz sand. The average value of Coliform and E.coli bacteria in Blackwater waste for 25 days after passing through black sand has varied values with an average of 6.55x106 MPN / 100 ml and 6.54x106 MPN / 100 ml, while the quartz sand is 8.94x106 MPN / 100 ml and 6.85x106 MPN / 100 ml. Blackwater waste for 25 days after passing through black sand and quartz sand has not been able to reduce the bacteria Coliform and E. coli. Bacteria cannot die by filtering, so additional disinfectants are needed in their processing.
